Another Word on Motorcycle Safety

There is nothing quite like the freedom one feels on a motorcycle, a dirt bike, an ATV - the wind in your face, the sun overhead, and the wide open spaces or the road as your playground. But all too suddenly the fun, the freedom, the experience can come to a halt if one in your party is involved in an accident. The Transportation Safety Department reports annually on the increase in motorcycle accidents and fatalities, due mostly to the fact that more and more riders are taking to the streets and byways of this great nation without the proper safety gear.

I have two friends personally who have laid their bikes down and suffered the consequences of riding unprotected. Of course, your head is the primary concern because a head injury can so easily be fatal. Please don't ride without a helmet, and don't let those you ride with ride without a helmet. A growing trend on the roads is to ride with a cute helmet, like a half helmet, a peanut helmet, but if you lay your bike down with that kind of a helmet, the risk is far greater that you will sustain an injury than if you wear a helmet like the one pictured above.

But your legs, your arms and your trunk need protection as well. Thankfully both of my friends were wear helmets, but one sustained a nasty scrape, or road rash, as we call it, on her arm because it was a warm summer day, and they were just going for a short ride, and they didn't wear sleeves of any type. It might be hot, but better hot than raw.
